The homelands of the Eastern churches are plagued with significant economic and social woes, many of which are caused by conflict and political instability. Usually a minority, local churches nevertheless take an active role in alleviating a host of social problems: disease, famine, malnutrition, poverty and unemployment.
Last year, your generosity enabled us to assist more than 100 educational, medical and including:
- Al Hayat Hospital in Baghdad — Run by the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, the hospital was recently expanded to meet an increasing demand. CNEWA helped furnish and equip the new annex.
- St. Joseph Hospital in Jerusalem — Established by the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition, the hospital delivers medical services for patients from East Jerusalem and the West Bank. CNEWA is helping to establish a maternity department.
- Libraries in India — A network of 14 libraries in rural districts of the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly will each have 375 books, 10 common periodicals and will be linked to a central library. CNEWA helped purchase the books, registers, furniture and stationery.
